On April 22, the agricultural trade mission was launched in New Delhi by Alexis M. Taylor, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs. Developing and expanding business prospects with importers in India is the goal of the USDA-sponsored agriculture trade mission. Eleven state departments of agriculture and forty-seven agribusiness and farm groups from the United States are taking part in the mission.

"India, being the most populous nation and fifth-largest economy in the world, is well-positioned for ongoing expansion as a leading market for American food and agricultural products," Under Secretary Taylor stated. "Exports from American agribusinesses and producers can flourish in India's strong consumer-oriented market, thanks to the country's expanding middle class, which is expected to surpass 660 million by 2030."

The upcoming week will see representatives from a number of American food and agriculture brands meeting with local importers in an effort to forge new business relationships.

The move by India to impose tariffs on a range of agricultural items from the United States, such as chicken, fruits, vegetables, pulses, and tree nuts, will only serve to strengthen these ties and facilitate commerce between the two countries.

In a statement released by the USDA, the agency emphasised that the trade mission presents an opportunity to further strengthen the bilateral connection between the US and India, citing the two countries' lengthy history of agricultural trading.
