Due to a paucity of proof linking India to the Pannun case, Russia has questioned the United States.

On May 8, the Russian Foreign Ministry denied the Washington Post's claims that India was involved in a failed conspiracy to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Sikh politician who supported Khalistan, on US soil. "The United States continues to make unfounded accusations about religious freedoms, demonstrating a lack of understanding of India's national mentality and history," stated Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia's foreign ministry, in response to a media query. "The United States's behaviour is obviously an attempt to meddle in India's domestic affairs..."In the absence of proof, assumptions cannot be considered valid...India as a sovereign nation is being disrespected.

Zakharova elaborated, saying, "The reason [behind the US accusations] is to unbalance the internal political situation in India and complicate the General Elections".

After saying on 30 April that the US is "regularly working" with the Indian government and "enquiring for additional updates" in its probe into the incident, US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel followed up with the statement.

Patel made the comments during a press briefing hosted by the US State Department. This came after a story in The Washington Post revealed the case involving a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer, citing anonymous sources.

The guy named as "CC-1" in the US indictment that was unsealed in November 2023 in connection to the Pannun case was determined to be RAW official Vikram Yadav, according to the WaPo investigative investigation published on Apr. 29. The Research and Analysis Wing is an Indian government organisation, and Yadav is an official there.

A spokesman for India's Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, had previously denied the allegations, calling them "speculative and unnecessary" given the ongoing nature of the probe.

According to the Indian Home Ministry, Pannun is considered a terrorist. He is the general lawyer for the New York-based organisation Sikhs for Justice.
