Telangana man shot dead by 16-year-old near Atlantic City, NJ

Hyderabad, Nov 17 (IANS) A man from Telangana was shot dead by a 16-year-old in  a carjacking incident, according to information received by his relatives on Saturday.

Sunil Edla (61) was fatally shot outside his residence in Ventnor City in New Jersey at around 8 p.m. on November 15

Sunil, hailing from Medak district of Telangana, was working as night auditor in hospitality industry in Atlantic City.

Sunil was leaving his home on 6 N. Nashville Ave to work the overnight shift when the killer shot him and escaped with his car. The victim died on the spot.

The police on Friday tracked the killer, an Egg Harbor City resident, and arrested him. He has been charged with murder, robbery, carjacking, and unlawful possession of a handgun.

Sunil, who had migrated to the US in 1987, was to travel to India later this month to visit his family.

According to his relatives, he had made all arrangements for two-month trip to visit his mother for her 95th birthday and celebrate Christmas with the family.

Sunil was active in the community and was also known for playing piano at churches in Atlantic City

NBC adds

Police found Sunil Edla's 2002 Subaru Forester on the 1600 block of Sewell Avenue in Atlantic City, and used surveillance video from around the city to track the suspect down.

The killer was arrested without incident on the 1500 block of Sewell Avenue and is being held at the Harborfields Juvenile Detention Facility.

A preliminary autopsy showed that Sunil Edla died of multiple gunshot wounds, the district attorney's office said.

"I'm just speechless right now," said Morrison Edla, the victim's son. "They could have just taken the car and let him go."

A neighbor said the killer ambushed the 61-year-old and shot him dead right after the grandfather had brought a child into his house.

Brian Wells said he viewed surveillance video of the ambush that showed the teen riding up to the home. The killer dropped his bike and hid as he waited for Sunil Edla to exit the house, Wells said.

"[Sunil Edla] went upstairs, came back down," Wells said. "The guy walked right over, popped him in the head, got in the car and left."
