Ameya Pawar to face run off election on April 2 for Chicago City Treasurer
Ameya Pawar, candidate for treasurer of Chicago city faces a run off on April 2, as none of the three candidates could get more than 50 percent votes in yesterday’s election. He will face State Rep. Melissa Conyears-Ervin, who got 44.3 percent votes (210,61744.) Pawar got 41.6 percent (197,895) A third candidate got 14.1 percent only
The mayoral election too faces a run off as none of the 14 candidates could get more than 20 percent votes.
Former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot, who got 17.5 percent votes will face second place winner Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County Board President (15.9 percent). The runoff winner will become the first African-American woman to serve as mayor of Chicago.
Former US Commerce Secretary Bill Daley came third with 14.7 percent votes. Daley conceded the race shortly before 10 p.m.
The runoff battle between Lightfoot and Preckwinkle promises to be a donnybrook, pitting a new reformer against an old one who has since become a party boss. Whatever happens, assuming the two indeed face each other in a runoff, Chicago will make history with its first African-American woman as mayor, Chicago sun Times noted.
