Nashra Mohammed, 18, running for District 219 School Board in Niles, Il

Eighteen-year-old Nashra Mohammed is running to be a member of the school board in District 209 of Niles, Illinois.
As a former high school student of Niles West High School, Mohammed is running to be an advocate for the students, the teachers, the parents, and taxpayers. She feels that public education ties in very intimately to the vitality of our community.
‘Mohammed, who is running as an independent, praised District 219 for its diversity and for providing counselors, vocational training, test preparation and clubs for all students.
‘Because of the wide range of clubs, there are tons of scholarship opportunities. These schools are already doing great in these areas.
Two of the issues on which the district can improve are professional development for teachers and hiring teachers that ‘mirror’ student demographics, she said.’
She praised District 219 for its diversity and for providing counselors, vocational training, test preparation and clubs for all students.

Candidates for the Niles Township High School District 219 Board say the district needs to better communicate with feeder districts, improve safety and hire teachers that better reflect the diversity of its student body.

Nashra Mohammed and her family moved to Lincolnwood 3 years ago in search of the right place to continue her education. Mohammed is currently attending DePaul University where she is double majoring in MIS and Political Science. She aspires to pursue a career in Law.

She worked with the Democratic Party of Evanston in support of Laura Fine and Jan Schakowsky where she attended meetings, held phone banks, and gathered signatures in the area. Working with Laura Fine her senior year heightened her passion for a push for quality education. Mohammed worked as an election judge her senior year where she became more interested in her community.

Mohammed has been part of several charity organizations in hoping to make a world a better place. She worked with organizations such as Feed My Starving Children, The Chicago Coalition of the Homeless, and The Humanity Projects throughout her high school career. At the age of 18, Mohammed is full of devotion and enthusiasm surrounding this opportunity.
