New Delhi, May 1
An Indian visitor and three others of Indian origin were reported killed in the US' Cincinatti city, but it was not a hate crime, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Tuesday.

In a tweet, the Minister said she was informed by the Indian Ambassador about the killings that took place on Sunday evening.

"The matter is under investigation by the police, but it is not a hate crime. Our Consul General in New York is coordinating with the authorities concerned and will keep me informed on this. @IndiainNewYork," she said in another tweet.

The victims are Hakikat Singh Panag, 59, his wife Paramjit Kaur, 62, their daughter Shalinder Kaur, 39, and his wife’s sister, Amarjit Kaur, 58, the Butler County Coroner’s Office confirmed.

The Butler County Coroner's Office confirmed the names of the deceased, listing their times of death at 9:50 p.m. Sunday and the cause of death as gunshot wounds.

Panag had three grandchildren who lived at the apartment, but they were not home at the time.

On Sunday night a man believed to be Panag’s son-in-law returned to his West Chester Township home and found much of his family on the floor bleeding to death. The man called 911, yelled for help and banged on his neighbor’s door at the Lakefront at West Chester apartment complex.

West Chester Police Chief Joel Herzog confirmed the caller was related to the victims and also lived at the residence. He said the man has spoken to investigators and is not in custody.

The New York office of the Consulate General of India tweeted that the slayings, which were discovered Sunday night at an apartment unit off Wyndtree Drive, is not a hate crime.

A dive team with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation recovered a gun from a pond near the scene of the crime on Tuesday, according to Fox19.
