Amazon to open pop-up store on Chinese platform Pinduoduo
Beijing, Nov 25
Retail giant Amazon which withdrww its domestic e-commerce marketplace business in China in July is now set to open a pop-up store on Chinese e-commerce platform Pinduoduo.
According to the South China Morning Post, the US behemoth has been shifting its strategy in the country amid fierce competition from domestic operators.
"The Amazon Global Store pop-up store on Pinduoduo provides customers with a curated selection of about 1,000 overseas products with competitive prices, authenticity guarantee and convenient shipping," Amazon said in a statement on Monday.
The store will be available until the end of next month.
Facing stiff competition from local online marketplace operators, including Alibaba, JD.com as well as the fast-growing Pinduoduo, Amazon's exit from e-commerce business in July ended the company's 15 years of journey into the China market.
In the statement, Amazon said it will continue to invest and grow Amazon Global Store business in China.
Pushing the boundaries of what and where to sell, effective use of pre-order campaigns and leveraging live streaming to drive sales were the three key factors that allowed Alibaba to generate a staggering $38.4 billion in sales at this year's Singles' Day shopping event on November 11.
The reports in July said that Alibaba owns 58.2 per cent of China's e-commerce market in terms of sales, followed by JD.com's 16.3 per cent and Pinduoduo's 5.2 per cent.
Amazon shoppers in China are no longer able to buy goods from third-party merchants in the country but they are still able to order from the US, Britain, Germany and Japan via the retail giant's global store.
