NEW YORK CITY, New York, March 22, 2024 - The Indian Overseas Congress USA (IOC USA) embarks on a vital mission as it launches its official campaign for the Lok Sabha 2024 elections, declaring this election as the “mother of all Lok Sabha elections.” With a fervent commitment to uphold the core values of freedom, fairness, secularism, and democracy, the IOC USA stands firm in its resolve to ensure that India remains a land where every citizen is treated equally, regardless of religion, caste, language, or region.
The stakes are high, as Indian democracy faces unprecedented challenges. A potential third term for the current Prime Minister Modi could steer the country towards electoral autocracy, threatening the very foundation of democratic principles. Under the leadership of Modi-led BJP, India’s oncecherished status as a beacon of democracy is under siege, with increasing
disregard for constitutional values of equality and a disturbing legitimization of discrimination based on religion.
Amidst these turbulent times, the plight of the youth remains dire. With an alarming unemployment rate of 44.5% among individuals aged 20-24 years in the fourth quarter of 2023, coupled with a record-high demand for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in rural India, the urgency for change has never been more palpable.
The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated existing challenges, leading to a sharp rise in hunger and malnutrition despite increased healthcare measures by the government. Promises made to Indian farmers, such as Minimum Support Price (MSP) assurances, have remained unfulfilled, adding to the disillusionment of the populace. Furthermore, the alarming incidents of violence against women, exemplified by the horrific gang rapes in Manipur, underscore the urgent need for leadership that not only espouses respect for women but also takes tangible actions to ensure their safety and dignity.
In stark contrast to these concerning realities, the incumbent government’s track record is marred by broken promises and a betrayal of public trust. Despite pledging zero tolerance for pay-to-play contributions, the BJP has emerged as the primary beneficiary - BJP cornered three-quarters of the electoral bonds or Rs 6,564 crores ($791million). Modi administration
weaponized investigating agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED), and Income Tax (IT) departments, to intimidate individuals and extort money for the BJP for political gain.
In this critical juncture, the Congress Party, under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, emerges as a beacon of hope and the true alternative.
