April 24 :
Representing Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District, Bhavini Patel, a well-known Indian American politician, was unsuccessful in the Democratic primary. Contender Patel was pitted against long-serving Congresswoman Summer Lee in the highly anticipated primary election. Patel ran a competitive race, but he was ultimately defeated by Lee, who received 59% of the vote.

Also, President Joe Biden and Republican Party leader Donald Trump both won well in Pennsylvania's primary elections. Compared to Trump's 80% support from Republicans, Biden's 94% support from Democrats was striking. Remarkably, in the Pennsylvania Republican presidential primary, former candidate Nikki Haley—who had previously dropped out of the race—surprisingly received nearly 20% of the party's electoral votes.

Patel's campaign was defined by her commitment to progressive policies and her outspoken endorsement of Joe Biden. Alternatively, Lee had been vocal in her support for Palestine during its confrontations with Israel and had been critical of several parts of Biden's policies. Lee was a first-term lawmaker. The progressive message that resonates tremendously in Pittsburgh and its environs was borne out by the primary election results.

"Her (Patel's) loss Tuesday shows that a progressive candidate like Ms. Lee can still carry districts like Pittsburgh, despite Ms. Patel and her supporters claiming that the incumbent's progressive views and alignment with the 'Squad' in Congress did not accurately reflect the politics of the area."

Members of Congress Rashida Tlaib, Ayana Pressley, Ilhan Omar, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are all part of the "Squad" of progressive lawmakers. In particular, many people in the Indian diaspora and beyond related to Bhavini Patel's story of coming to the United States from Gujarat, India. When asked about her mother's immigration to the US, she typically mentioned how her mom started a thriving catering and food truck company in Western Pennsylvania. One of the main points of Patel's campaign was this story of an immigrant's resilience and achievement, which reflected the American ideal.

Yet, there were obstacles to Patel's campaign. Racist attacks and hate crimes targeting her brought attention to the persistence of prejudice in American politics. Regardless of these obstacles, Patel was able to garner the support of many communities throughout the nation, including Hindu and Jewish organisations, who rallied behind her message of inclusion and advancement.

Central to Patel's platform was the call for improved US-India relations and immigration reform. Her platform included measures to increase funding for immigration assistance and make the system more accessible in more languages in order to reduce the backlog and other problems.

In his proposal for improved ties between India and the United States, Patel emphasised the importance of tapping into the skills and knowledge of Indians living abroad, especially those in the professional and academic sectors, so that they might help advance economies worldwide. She emphasised the necessity for cooperation and creativity in resolving these complicated matters, and she stressed the significance of forming coalitions worldwide to handle critical concerns like climate change. Though she lost her run for congress, Bhavini Patel's campaign and message touched many and started vital discussions regarding immigration reform, progressive principles, and global relations.
