May 8 :
'Draconian response' to student protests in the United States was denounced in a statement by the Sikh Coalition, a non-profit group fighting transnational repression to safeguard the lives and civil rights of Sikhs in the United States.

All people, including students, have the right to peacefully demonstrate for their political opinions, according to our civil rights organization's fundamental belief. The organisation firmly opposes any calls for violence or genocide and believes in the freedom of peaceful protest. They have firsthand experience with such tragedies and find it abhorrent to wish them on other people.

Concerning the recent events at Arizona State University and the University of California, Los Angeles, the statement expressed deep concern over the disparity between the violent attacks on protestors and the apparent lack of response from police during the violent assault on a student encampment on Tuesday night.

Considering the punishment of some political opinions while protecting others creates an impossible conundrum for a democracy that is based on the values of free speech and assembly, as has been noted on multiple occasions, the statement said.

In conclusion, we reject categorically any discourse that glorifies or condones the use of threats or acts of violence against student protesters, regardless of their actual or perceived racial, ethnic, or religious affiliation. Labelling someone as a "extremist" or "terrorist" puts them in grave peril, and the Sikh community is well aware of this. No one, especially young people, should be subjected to such scrutiny.
