Indian-American Sanket Jayshukh Bulsara has been confirmed to serve as a district judge for the Eastern District of New York, according to New York Senator Charles Schumer. After Schumer sent Bulsara's name for district judge to Joe Biden's administration in February 2024, the president personally nominated her. The promotion of Bulsara, who had previously served as a magistrate judge, has now been confirmed by Schumer.

After making history as a Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District of New York since 2017, Bulsara is a first-rate legal intellect and a dedicated, skilled public servant. In a statement released on May 17, US Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer praised Judge Bulsara, who was the first Indian-American to hold that position. Judge Bulsara served as General Counsel for the Securities and Exchange Commission, where he diligently sought to safeguard investors and the nation's financial markets.

"In addition to his extensive expertise in securities, contracts, bankruptcy, and regulatory matters, he has a remarkable track record of pro bono representation of ex-offenders, victims of domestic violence, and those on death row."

After earning an A.B. from Harvard College and a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School, Bulsara achieved the highest possible honours.

His family moved from the Bronx to New Rochelle and then to Edgemont, New York after he was born to Indian immigrants. His dad was an engineer for the New York City government, and his mom was a nurse; they emigrated more than half a century ago.

Bulsara exemplifies the American Dream and made history as the first South Asian American federal judge to serve on any court in the Second Circuit. He was selected as a Magistrate Judge after being the child of hardworking immigrants from Kenya and India. It was with great pride that I advocated for Judge Bulsara's candidature and recommended him to President Biden. It is my firm belief that he will serve the district court with the utmost professionalism, honesty, and exceptional legal acumen. In his quest of unbiased and fair justice, he will follow the law wherever it leads him," Schumer stated.

Judge Bulsara previously worked for the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as its Acting General Counsel. At the SEC, he was also the deputy general counsel for enforcement, adjudication, and appellate litigation.

As a Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District, Judge Bulsara draws on a diverse background that includes clerking for Hon. John G. Koeltl on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, working as Acting General Counsel for the Securities and Exchange Commission, and developing a broad-based, trial-centered practice. "As a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of New York, his vast range of invaluable experiences will serve him well," Schumer continued.
