American college professors stabbed in China; suspect taken into custody

The stabbing deaths of four American college professors in a public park in Jilin, northeastern China, have led to the arrest of a suspect, The man, a 55-year-old resident of the city's Longtan District, has been named Cui by the authorities as the perpetrator of the stabbing.

According to the police, the suspect "collided with a foreigner while walking" at Beishan Park, a lively central park. According to the authorities, the suspect proceeded to stabbing the teachers and a Chinese spectator who intervened during the event in an attempt to apprehend him. The report was received by the police at around 11:49 am local time on Monday, and officers were dispatched to the scene. The injured were then transported to the hospital for treatment, as per report.

While taking part in a collaboration programme with Beihua University in Jilin, the faculty members from Mount Vernon, Iowa's private liberal arts college Cornell College were injured "in a serious incident" on Monday. "We have been in contact with all four instructors and are assisting them during this time," stated Jonathan Brand, president of Cornell College, adding that no students participated in the programme.

The United States Department of State is keeping tabs on the situation in China in light of allegations of a stabbing incident. Kim Reynolds, governor of Iowa, has stated that he maintains communication with both the state department and the state's congressional delegation. The state agency and Iowa's congressional delegation are in communication with me in light of this terrible incident. He asked for prayers for their speedy recuperation, safe return, and the well-being of their loved ones back home.

Three individuals were seen lying on the ground, surrounded by spectators, in a video that was supposedly shot after the incident and shared on Chinese social media, according to the New York Times. Two of them were covered in blood, and one looked like he was pressing his palm on his wound. The trio was engrossed on their mobile devices.

There were 1,074 students enrolled in the 2022–2023 school year at private, four-year Cornell College, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1. At that particular year, the most popular majors at the school were politics, biochemistry, kinesiology, engineering, and computer science.

Students attend classes for 18 days at a time according to the college's academic calendar. In an effort to defuse their volatile relationship, the US and China have lately sought to strengthen their educational links. Xi Jinping, the leader of China, said in November that 50,000 American youth would be invited to take part in exchange and study programmes in China during the next five years.
