June 15:
Next week, a high-ranking US delegation, headed by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, will visit India to meet with the Dalai Lama, a spiritual leader from Tibet, in Dharamshala.

The team from both parties is being led to India by Michael McCaul, the Republican who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "The delegation includes Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY), House Rules Committee Ranking Member Jim McGovern (D-MA), House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Indo-Pacific Ranking Member Ami Bera (D-CA), and Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), and Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY)," the House Foreign Affairs Committee's official press release Group stated.

"While there, the delegation will meet with His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, Indian government officials, and representatives of U.S. businesses in the country," according to the report. "India is the world's largest democracy and an important strategic partner of the United States," McCaul said.

I am excited to meet with American businesspeople and government leaders to discuss ways to deepen our ties with India. The opportunity to meet with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, is also an honour for me," McCaul said, as reported in the statement. The Tibetan people, according to McCaul, are "democracy-loving people" who value religious liberty.

"This visit should highlight the bipartisan support in the US Congress for Tibet to have a say in their own future," according to him. "I look forward to joining Chairman McCaul and Speaker Emerita Pelosi to demonstrate the strong bipartisan support for the U.S.-India relationship," Meeks said in his statement.

The connection between India and the United States, he said, has become one of the most important in the last quarter of a century. "I'm also honoured to have a chance to meet with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and to hear his views on how the American People can help advance the Tibetan people's struggle for autonomy," added the president.
According to a statement released by his office on June 3, the Dalai Lama, a spiritual leader from Tibet, is set to visit the US for medical treatment.
