July 23 :
Ro Khanna, a Democrat from Maryland, demanded that Kimberly Cheatle step down as director of the Secret Service on July 22. When the House Oversight Committee first began taking testimony about the failed murder attempt on former President Trump on July 13, Khanna assured Cheatle that the matter was not political. According to Khanna, resignation is necessary in the event of an attempt on the life of a president, former president, or contender.

At first, the lawmaker wanted to know if Trump's assassination on July 13 was the worst security failure since Reagan's in 1981. Cheatle had previously responded affirmatively. After Cheatle gave Khanna the go-ahead, Khanna grilled her about the Secret Service's failure to protect former President Trump, her reluctance to resign, and her other issues.

Then Cheatle reacted by saying she was determined to find out what happened. "I will not rest until I have determined what happened and how to fix it. Additionally, we do not avoid our duties as Secret Service agents. The past president, the American people, this committee, the agency, and myself will all hold me accountable, she said.

Khanna was taken aback by Cheatle's decision to stay on. Is it your sincere belief that serving in this capacity is the best course of action for the United States right now? In your opinion, do you believe that there are Trump fans that trust you? He emphasized the need for non-partisan organizations that can win over the trust of every American.

As soon as an assassination attempt on a presidential candidate occurs, it is unacceptable for a security agency chief to remain in that position, Khanna concluded, pleading on Cheatle to resign immediately.

Raja Krishnamoorthi, an Indian American lawmaker, educated Cheatle about the many conspiracy theories surrounding the presidential candidate's involvement in the incident during the same hearing. Through a series of yes/no questions, Krishnamoorthi confirmed with the director of the Secret Service that the incident was not a staged shooting, the product of a plot involving high-ranking government officials, or directed or carried out by an outside power.
