July 26 :
For his role in trying to lure a kid into criminal sexual behavior, a federal court in the US handed down a 12-year prison sentence with a 10-year supervised release order to an Indian national. Upendra Aduru, 32, was named by US Attorney Eric G. Olshan as an Indian national enrolled in a U.S. university on a student visa. Aduru had online chats with a detective posing as a girl aged thirteen between September 20, 2022, and October 6, 2022.

Aduru shared multiple adult pornographic photographs with the undercover detective and repeatedly expressed his desire to engage in sexual acts with the alleged 13-year-old, according to court filings.

After much persistence, Aduru managed to set up a rendezvous with the girl, and he went to a park in Millcreek Township. He was taken into custody when he arrived. The undercover detective's and his social media conversations were discovered during a later examination of his phone.

The Department of Justice launched a nationwide initiative in May 2006 called "Project Safe Childhood" to combat the growing problem of sexual exploitation and abuse of children, and this case is a component of that effort. Project Safe Childhood, coordinated by the U.S. Attorneys' Offices and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) of the Criminal Division, pools resources from the federal, state, and local levels to find and punish those responsible for sexually exploiting children and to locate and save victims.
