Speaking at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, First Lady Jill Biden said how she had witnessed President Joe Biden "dig deep into his soul" to make the decision not to run for reelection last month. "Kamala and Tim, you will win," Jill Biden stated on Monday night (local time), addressing the newly formed Democratic ticket of Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Tim Walz of Minnesota.

Concerns about Biden's age, especially after his poor performance in the debate with Donald Trump, led him to announce on June 21 that he was withdrawing from seeking reelection to the job.

Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, was announced by Harris as her running partner. Among a group of likely candidates hailing from states with an advantage in politics and higher levels of name recognition, Walz, 60, stood out.
