Zuckerberg Tells House Committee Biden-Harris Administration Pressured Meta to Censor COVID Content
Washington DC, August 27:
Posts pertaining to COVID-19 were "repeatedly pressurised" by the Biden-Harris administration, according to a letter written by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and sent to the House Judiciary Committee.
Even though the platform needed to make certain adjustments "with the benefit of hindsight and new information," he maintained that they would not be implemented today. According to Zuckerberg, he'regrets' not having been "more outspoken" about it.
For months in 2021, top officials in the Biden administration, including the White House, harped on our teams to remove comedic and satirical elements from COVID-19 and became visibly irritated when we disagreed. The choice to remove content was ultimately ours to make, and we take full responsibility for it, as well as any adjustments to our enforcement measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Zuckerberg stated in the letter.
I feel bad that we didn't speak out more strongly against the government's interference. Also, looking back, I can see that we made some decisions that, given the chance and more information, we would have changed. I believe it is important that we remain firm on our content standards regardless of the route the administration takes, as I told our people at the time, and we are prepared to fight back if this happens again.
The Republican-led House Committee on Judiciary was apprised of Meta CEO's letter through social networking platform X.
Three facts were just admitted by Mark Zuckerberg: 1. Facebook was "pressured" to block American content by the Biden-Harris team. 2. Americans were censored by Facebook. 3. The story about Hunter Biden's laptop was throttled by Facebook. "Another victory for free speech," the message stated.
In another incident that Zuckerberg brought up in the letter, he claimed that the FBI had alerted Meta to the possibility of a Russian disinformation campaign targeting the Biden family and Burisma in the run-up to the 2020 election.
After this, a piece on alleged corruption within Joe Biden's family was demoted by Meta. However, the CEO of Meta has stated that the story should not have been degraded because it was not reporting about Russian disinformation.
"That fall, we forwarded the story to our fact-checkers for examination and temporarily demoted it while we awaited their response. The story was about corruption charges involving the family of then-Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. The New York Post had reported on these allegations. "Looking back, we should not have de-emphasized the story; it is now obvious that the reporting was not Russian disinformation," he said.
