Canadian MP Chandra Arya Meets PM Modi, Highlights India’s Importance for Canadian Exports and Investments
August 28 :
During his recent visit to India, Canadian MP Chandra Arya met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explore bilateral ties. The "significant and growing market" for Canadian exports and investments, according to Arya, is India. He highlighted India's importance in meeting Canada's "critical talent needs."
While in New Delhi on August 12, I had the honor of visiting with Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi at his residential office," Chandra Arya wrote in an X post. Relationships between India and Canada were covered in our meeting. In addition to being an important source for meeting our crucial manpower needs, India is a large and expanding market for Canadian exports and investments.
"In the long-term, Canada's strategic interest and India’s strategic interest are absolutely aligned," stated the outgoing Canadian High Commissioner in India a few months ago."We all need to work to realize the full potential of our relationship," said he.
While attending the G7 Summit in July, Prime Minister Modi met with his Canadian counterpart, Justin Trudeau. "Meeted Canadian PM @JustinTrudeau at the G7 Summit," Prime Minister Modi wrote in an X post.
Tensions between the two countries have been rising since last year, when the prime minister of Canada raised "credible allegations" in the House of Commons regarding possible ties between Indian agents and the murder of Khalistani terrorist Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, in June 2023. This led to the meeting between Modi and Trudeau.
On the other hand, India has called the charges "absurd" and "motivated." In June of last year, gunshots murdered Nijjar outside a Gurdwara in Surrey. He had been labeled a terrorist by India's National Investigation Agency in 2020. Reportedly released in March of this year, the video of Nijjar's murder showed armed men shooting him.
