Indian-Origin Lawyer Dismissed After Investigation into Relationship with CEO
September 13 :
After an internal inquiry into an inappropriate relationship between the company's chief executive officer, Alan Shaw, and attorney Nabanita Nag, who is of Indian ancestry, was sacked from her position at Norfolk Southern Corporation, she was chief legal officer. Despite the executives' consenting connection, they were both fired for breaching corporate policy and ethics. The decision was confirmed in a statement by the transportation corporation, which runs a huge freight network over 22 states in the US.
Shaw was found to have violated corporate policies by having an intimate relationship with the chief legal officer, which led to this change in leadership. The inquiry is still underway, but preliminary findings indicate that this was the case. The corporation made it clear that Shaw's resignation has nothing to do with the way they present their finances or their outcomes of operations.
Joining Norfolk Southern in 2020 as general counsel, Nag was promoted to chief legal officer in 2022 and then became executive vice president of corporate affairs in 2023. Prior to joining Norfolk Southern, Nag had a stellar career with experience at three Fortune 300 companies, including Goldman Sachs.
Nag managed the audit and compliance, government relations, corporate communications, corporate giving, and legal departments in addition to her responsibilities in corporate affairs and law. Her educational background includes a J.D. from New York University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Government and English from Georgetown University. Mark R. George, who had been serving as the company's CFO, has been promoted to the position of president and chief executive officer following the departures.
