Canadian MP Chandra Arya condemns calls for a renewed inquiry into the Air India Kanishka bombing.
Ottawa September 27 :
In his address to the Canadian Parliament, MP Chandra Arya reflected on the tragic legacy of Air India Flight 182, which was attacked mid-air by Khalistan extremists 39 years ago. Arya has challenged requests for a new probe into the attack which he believes prmotes Khalistani extremists ideas. The catastrophic incident, which resulted in the deaths of 329 people, is the biggest mass slaughter in Canadian history and is a sobering reminder of the deadly impact of terrorism.
"39 years back Air India Flight 182 was blown-up mid-air from a bomb planted by Canadian Khalistan fanatics. It killed 329 people and is the greatest mass massacre in Canadian history. Even now, the ideology responsible for this terrorist assault is still alive among few people in Canada. Two Canadian public inquiries found Khalistan fanatics accountable for the bombing of Air India aircraft. Now there is a petition on parliament portal asking for a new probe pushing conspiracy theories espoused by Khalistan radicals. Mr. Bal Gupta, whose wife Rama was killed in this attack told the Globe and Mail "It's terribly frustrating. It opens up old wounds all over again. It's all crap. It's an attempt to obtain exposure and support for terrorist acts" Arya remarked in his speech to Parliament.
On the 39th anniversary of the Air India Kanishka bombing in June, a Canadian journalist named Daniel Bordman paid respect to the victims at Toronto's Queens Park. However, there were rumors that Pro Khalistan militants tried to disrupt Bordman's ceremony.
The journalist made the comment, "When the Khalistanis came to disturb and interrupt that service, I felt it was important to stand up against them," in an interview with ANI, implying that we must stand in solidarity with terrorist victims while firmly rejecting those who would carry out attacks like these. Both the victims and the would-be terrorists must have our unwavering support. I believe that fighting evil is a crucial aspect of our actions today. With their Khalistani flags in tow, they set out to cause trouble at the cemetery.
Any effort to glorify the act of terrorism was also condemned by the Indian High Commission in Canada. It is disheartening and unacceptable for any country or people that values peace to condone acts of terrorism, such as the 1985 bombing of AI-182. The Indian High Commission expressed regret that such incidents are frequently tolerated in Canada in a statement dated June 24.
