October 1 :
With a statement that read, the only patriotic choice for president in contrast to Trump, the editorial board of the New York Times praised Democratic candidate Kamala Harris on September 30.In its written support, the paper focused on Trump's unsuitability for the presidency, describing him as "unfit" on moral and temperamental grounds, and did not even include the vice president's name until the fourth paragraph.

"This unequivocal, dispiriting truth -- Donald Trump is not fit to be president -- should be enough for any voter who cares about the health of our country and the stability of our democracy to deny him re-election."Just the day before, editors at The New Yorker used the phrase "anyone but Trump" to describe the Republican candidate, calling him the "ongoing assault on the stability, the nerves, and the nature of the United States."

According to the Times' extensive endorsement, Harris "may not be the perfect candidate for every voter, especially those who are frustrated and angry about our government’s failures to fix what’s broken." "Yet we urge Americans to contrast Harris's record with her opponent's," the newspaper reported. "Harris is more than a necessary alternative."

No Republican has received the full support of the Times editorial board since Dwight Eisenhower in 1956. There may be two parties in this election, but the publication stressed that the issues at stake go beyond "competing politics and principles" to something more fundamental.

"Unless American voters stand up to him, Trump will have the power to do profound and lasting harm to our democracy," according to the article.

According to the Times, it's reasonable for voters to demand more specific policies from Harris. "Given the stakes of this election, Harris may think that she is running a campaign designed to minimize the risks of an unforced error... under the belief that being the only viable alternative to Trump may be enough to bring her to victory."

"That strategy may ultimately prove winning, but it's a disservice to the American people and to her own record." In the meantime, it characterized the Republican Party as "little more than an instrument" in Trump's "quest to regain power" and asserted that a second term for Trump "would be much more damaging and divisive than the first." The editorial board declared that Kamala Harris was the one viable option.
