Trial Begins in Human Trafficking Tragedy That Claimed Indian Family's Lives
November 18 :
A Minnesota trial has begun over a tragic human smuggling case that led to the freezing deaths of an Indian family near the Canada-US border in January 2022. Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel, 29, and Steve Shand, 50, are accused of running a smuggling operation, with Patel allegedly arranging illegal crossings and Shand transporting migrants. Both deny the charges.
The Patel family, including Jagdish Patel, his wife Vaishaliben, and their two children, died in subzero temperatures during the journey. Their bodies were discovered on January 19, 2022, with Jagdish clutching his 3-year-old son. Prosecutors allege Patel recruited migrants in India, promising safe passage, but failed to deliver on those assurances.
The case highlights the growing dangers of illegal crossings, with over 14,000 Indians apprehended at the Canadian border in 2022. Immigration experts warn of the risks posed by transnational smuggling networks exploiting vulnerable families.
