Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Honored at Toast to Freedom Event
November 30
Raja Krishnamoorthi, an Indian American lawmaker for Illinois's 8th Congressional District, was honored with the Champion of Freedom Award at the Free Jimmy Lai Campaign's Toast to Freedom event on November 19. In particular, those who have fought for the rights of persons unfairly jailed by authoritarian governments are honored at this occasion for their unwavering commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and press freedom.
Thanks to his tireless advocacy for democracy in Hong Kong and around the world, Krishnamoorthi received this prestigious award. During his acceptance speech, he stressed the need to address the pro-democracy campaigner Jimmy Lai's arbitrary trial in Hong Kong, which had resumed that very day.
Today is the start of Jimmy Lai's unjust and arbitrary trial in Hong Kong, which brings us back to the importance of freeing Lai immediately and without conditions, as well as fighting for democracy and freedom in the city and around the globe, Krishnamoorthi stated. "I intend to keep fighting tooth and nail for human rights, press freedom, and the rule of law around the world."
The Uyghur people's forced labor is one example of the human rights abuses that the congressman has spoken out against in China. The number of entities included in the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Entity List was increased by 29 on November 20th, bringing the total to 107, by the Department of Homeland Security. This achievement was praised by Krishnamoorthi, who described it as an important step in the fight against human rights violations and forced labor.
