Senate Democrats Press Joe Biden to Shield Immigrant Families Ahead of Trump Presidency
December 11 :
Prior to President-elect Trump's inauguration, six Senate Democrats, including US Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), have pressed Joe Biden to intervene swiftly to safeguard immigrant families within the nation.
Not only did Durbin voice alarm about the possible effects of the new administration's immigration policy in a letter written on December 10, but so did Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), and Alex Padilla (D-CA).
The senators expressed their serious concern about the threat that the new administration poses to immigrants in their communities in a letter they penned. The senators represented varied states around the country and, together, represented millions of immigrant families.
The statement stated that mass deportations under Trump's administration "would jeopardize the safety and security of millions of mixed-status families, sow deep distrust and fear in the communities we represent, and destabilize the US economy," among other negative outcomes.
The Senators expressed their strong opposition to any actions that go against "our nation's core values," even though they did recognize the need of greater border security.
Given the remaining time in President Biden's tenure, the senators emphasized the need for immediate action. "The time to secure and finalize the policies of your government is running out quickly. As the president-elect prepares to take office, we beg you to finish the job started four years ago and safeguard immigrant families by taking swift and decisive action. Finally, the senators reiterated their backing of President Biden's immigration policies. one is our intention to collaborate with you to see these priorities through, and we are prepared to lend you a hand if you need one. Your steadfast leadership and commitment to our nation's progress are much appreciated.
