Trucks overloaded with excessive weight; no system in place on the machines, leaving the police helpless.
Taurus trucks crossing the border with excessive weight are passing through after paying a trivial fine. The lack of a system (option) to collect fines as per the law in the police's Point of Sale (POS) machines is helping them. As a result, they are included in the category of other fines and continue their journey after paying a maximum fine of 500 rupees. Under the central Motor Vehicles Act, there is a provision to impose a fine of 10,000 rupees for exceeding the specified weight limit and an additional fine of 2,000 rupees for every extra ton. However, vehicles are escaping after paying a trivial fine because the system for imposing fines in real-time online is not in place.
According to the guidelines issued by the central Ministry of Surface Transport, if overloaded vehicles are caught, they are allowed to continue their journey only after paying the fine and unloading the excess weight. Although the law states that not only the driver but also the owner is responsible if the vehicle is overloaded, this is not being enforced. Meanwhile, the POS machines provided to the R.T.O. Enforcement Department have a system to impose fines for overloading. However, the Motor Vehicle Enforcement lacks the system to conduct widespread inspections. Moreover, the police do not even have the POS system required for this. Despite the reports provided by the Special Branch police and others highlighting the practical difficulties, no action has been taken.
