M. T. One Of The Greatest Writers Bids Adiue
M.T. Vasudevan Nair (91), the personal pride of Malayalam, (15 July 1933 – 25 December 2024), popularly known as M.T., was an Indian writer, screenwriter and film director. He was a prolific and versatile writer in modern Malayalam literature. M.T. Vasudevan Nair (91), the personal pride of Malayalam, has passed away.
He is well known for his evocative storytelling, which explores human emotions and the complexities of rural life. His three major novels about the life of a married family in Kerala are Nalukettu, Asuravidhu and Kaalam. Randamoozham, which retells the story of the Mahabharata from the perspective of Bhimasena, is widely accepted as his masterpiece.
Murappennu (1965), Iruttinte Athmavu (1966), Pakalkkinavu (1966), Nagarame Nandi (1967), Asuravithu (1968), Olavum Theeravum (1970) Nizhalattam (1970), Vithukal (1971) etc were some of great contributions with excellent scripts and screenplays.
He also worked as a teacher and editor and has received awards such as the Padma Bhushan, the Jnanpitham Ezhuthachan Award, the JC Daniel Award, the Prathama Kerala Jyoti Award, and the Kerala Legislative Assembly Award.
He had been undergoing treatment at the Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode for the past week due to respiratory problems. At one stage, his health showed slight improvement, but by nightfall, it had deteriorated again. The medical team tried to revive him but failed. He has been in bed for the past few days due to age-related ailments. He was admitted to the hospital a month ago due to shortness of breath and pneumonia. His health condition had deteriorated even then. After days of treatment, the pneumonia was cured and MT was discharged from the hospital and was leading a restful life at home. In the meantime, he was admitted to the hospital after experiencing shortness of breath again.
