The Satanic Verses" arrives in India after 36 long years.

The Satanic Verses" has arrived in India. The book is arriving in the country after 36 years. The controversial book "The Satanic Verses" by British Indian novelist Salman Rushdie was banned during the tenure of the Rajiv Gandhi government. In 1988, the central government banned the book. The ban was imposed following allegations that Rushdie's novel blasphemed the prophet. As a result, the book was not available in the market. However, currently, limited copies of the book are available at Bahrisons Book Sellers in Delhi.

Rajani Malhotra, the owner of Bahrisons Book Sellers, told PTI that they have had the book for a few days and so far, the response has been great, with strong sales. The book, priced at ₹1,999, is currently available only at Bahrisons Book Sellers stores.

In 1988, the Rajiv Gandhi government had banned the import of the novel. Later, a petition was filed in the Delhi High Court challenging the ban on bringing the book from abroad. However, on October 5, 1988, the government informed the court that the verdict could not be obtained. Therefore, the court ruled that the ban should be assumed to no longer be in effect. "In light of the above-mentioned circumstances, we have no other option but to presume that such a notification is no longer in force," the court stated in the matter.

On August 12, 2022, in the attempted murder of Rushdie, he lost his sight in one eye and suffered severe injuries. The Booker Prize winner has faced numerous death threats due to his writings. The book The Satanic Verses, published in 1988, has been banned by countries including Iran, accusing it of blaspheming Islam.
