Dried arali (oleander) is more dangerous than fresh arali; inhaling smoke from it can even lead to death.

The flowers are very beautiful to look at, but they are poisonous. Arali, a plant that belongs to the Nerium Oleander family, is a toxic plant. The smoke produced when this plant is burned is harmful to health. Dried arali is more dangerous than its fresh counterpart. The chemical compounds such as Oleandrin and Oleandrogenin found in it are what make the plant and its flowers poisonous. Studies suggest that this can lead to death.

The arali plant is equally dangerous to both humans and animals. Studies have shown that cows and goats should not be allowed to consume its leaves or flowers. Numerous accidents have been reported after ingestion of its flowers, leaves, or seeds. Considering the risk of accidents, the Devaswom Board has imposed restrictions on the use of arali flowers in temples starting from May 2024. Studies suggest that controlled use can enhance the contraction ability of heart muscles, but excessive use can slow down their function.

Although poisonous, this plant can be used medicinally. However, Ayurvedic classical texts do not endorse its internal consumption. On the other hand, experts suggest that it is beneficial for treating wounds, skin diseases, and similar ailments when applied externally.
