Renjini RamachandranUnion Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has called for redefining the term "employment." He was speaking at a conference jointly organized by the Union Labour Ministry and the Confederation of Indian Industry in Delhi. He questioned why women working in other households are considered workers, while those doing the same work in their own homes are not. He also emphasized that women who care for livestock and engage in farming at home should be recognized as self-employed. He stated that this requires a policy-level change in the definition of employment.
The definition of employment should be revised to include homemakers and self-employed women. He expressed this stance in response to statistics highlighting the low participation of women in the workforce.
