Smoke Used to Drive Away bedbugs in Hostel; Two Lost Their Lives
The incident took place at the Miracle Colombo City hostel in Colombo, where two foreign tourists tragically lost their lives. The victims were young women from Germany and Britain who succumbed to the effects of unauthorized pesticide fumigation.
The deceased have been identified as Ebony McIntosh (24) from Derby, England, and Nadine Ragusa (26) from Germany.
On Saturday, hostel authorities used pesticides to fumigate the premises to eliminate a bedbugs infestation. Following the fumigation, the two women experienced severe physical distress and were rushed to the hospital, but their lives could not be saved. Currently, the police investigation into the incident is ongoing. Authorities stated that post-mortem examinations would be conducted once their family members arrive.
Following the incident, the hostel was shut down. Officials clarified that a decision on reopening the facility would only be made after receiving the post-mortem reports.
Ebony had arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday as part of her plan to travel across South Asia. She worked as a social media manager and digital marketing professional. After the fumigation, several others in the hostel also reported health issues, including breathing difficulties, vomiting, and dizziness, and sought medical attention.
