A Country Where You Can Rent a Husband, Wife, Mother, or Even Children!
Renting houses, cars, appliances, and clothes is a well-established business. Many people around us have improved their standard of living through such ventures. In today’s world, almost everything can be acquired for a price. But have you ever heard of a business where relationships can be rented?
We’ve seen in movies how people rent parents, but did you know that in one particular country, you can rent a wife, husband, parents, or even children—if you have the money? That country is Japan.
This unique business started in Japan nearly 30 years ago. What began on a small scale has now become a means of livelihood for many. With enough money, anyone can rent a family member—anyone from a father, mother, spouse, or even multiple people at once. These rented individuals stay with the client for a specified period, acting as temporary family members.
The concept was introduced in 1990 by a Tokyo-based company called "Family Romance." Initially, the company rented out actors to play roles for people in need of companionship. The goal was to help those struggling with loneliness.
The company’s owner, Ishii Yuichi, claims to have played the role of a father in over 25 families and has even acted as the husband to more than 600 women. He once received a request to act as a groom for a wedding. Yuichi’s company has nearly 1,000 employees, and clients pay between 5,000 and 20,000 yen per hour for their rented family members.
Reports suggest that several companies now offer similar services across Japan. Those interested in renting family members are provided with a list of available "actors" to choose from. Millions of people are reportedly using these services. Inspired by Japan, countries like South Korea and China have also begun adopting this business model.
