Rahul Gandhi Expresses Dissent in Meeting on Chief Election Commissioner Appointment
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, voiced his dissent during the meeting to decide on the new Chief Election Commissioner. He stated that a decision on the appointment should be made only after knowing the Supreme Court's stance on the matter.
Rahul Gandhi expressed his disagreement during the meeting called by the Prime Minister and the Union Law Minister to select a successor to Rajiv Kumar, who is set to retire tomorrow.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a public interest petition the day after tomorrow, challenging the exclusion of the Chief Justice of India from the selection process for the Chief Election Commissioner. Given this context, Rahul Gandhi urged that the meeting to appoint the new Commissioner should be postponed.
The Congress party has accused the government of attempting to exert control over the Election Commission, alleging that the BJP has no concerns about the institution's credibility.
