A seven-month-old baby was abducted and assaulted; the accused sentenced to death by the POCSO court.

In the case involving the attempted murder of a seven‑month‑old baby through sexual abuse, the accused was sentenced to death. It was the special POCSO court in Kolkata that, in rare instances, considered the case and awarded the death penalty. The court imposed the maximum sentence on 34‑year‑old Rajeev Ghosh. The incident occurred last December.

After the child went missing from her home, her parents approached the police. The accused, a sanitation worker, had molested the child, then fled along a footpath, and local residents, upon hearing the child’s cries, informed the police. A preliminary examination at the hospital revealed that the child had been sexually assaulted, with injuries present on her body, including her private parts. The police identified the suspect with the help of CCTV footage and arrested Rajeev Ghosh at a resort in Gopi Ballavur in Jargam.
