Aster PMF Hospital Successfully Performs Laser Balloon Angioplasty on an 80-Year-Old Patient

The cardiology department at Aster PMF Hospital successfully removed a blockage in an 80-year-old patient using laser balloon angioplasty. Previously, surgery was the only option to clear blockages in arteries with calcified plaques. However, advanced technologies for calcium removal are now available, the most modern being Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL).

Intravascular lithotripsy balloon angioplasty is used to remove hardened calcium deposits in blood vessels. This procedure addresses conditions where excessive calcium buildup restricts blood flow and affects heart function. Additionally, intravascular ultrasound imaging was used to prevent elevated creatinine levels and protect kidney function during the procedure.

The successful completion of the laser balloon angioplasty was led by Dr. Sreekala P., Senior Consultant Cardiologist at Aster PMF Hospital, with the support of the CCU and Cath Lab staff.
