India’s Defense Production Soars Post ‘Make in India’; ‘Made in Bihar’ Boots Used by Russian Army

Since the launch of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, India’s defense production has been growing at an unprecedented pace, according to reports. One remarkable example of this transformation is the military boots manufactured in Bihar, which are now even being used by the Russian army. A recent report released by the Ministry of Defense highlights a record surge in India’s defense exports.
This progress is a direct result of the ‘Make in India’ initiative introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At the start of Modi’s government, around 70% of India's defense equipment was imported. However, today, the country produces nearly 65% of its defense products domestically. India now exports bulletproof jackets, Dornier (Do-228) aircraft, Chetak helicopters, fast interceptor boats, lightweight torpedoes, and several other indigenous defense products to various nations.
In 2023-24, India’s defense production reached a record ₹1.27 lakh crore. The Modi government aims to increase this to ₹3 lakh crore by 2029. With the domestic development of modern warships, fighter jets, artillery systems, and advanced weaponry, India is rapidly emerging as a global powerhouse in defense manufacturing.
