JioHotstar, the streaming platform formed by merging Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema, has surpassed 100 million paid subscribers, the company announced on Thursday.
The merger, finalized last month, followed the sale of Disney’s India assets to Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), bringing Viacom18 and Star India under one entity. Nita M. Ambani chairs the joint venture, with Uday Shankar as vice-chairperson.
JioHotstar now dominates India’s OTT market, with a paid subscriber base far exceeding Netflix’s 15 million and Prime Video’s 18 million. The platform has relied heavily on sports content, particularly IPL, and reality shows like Bigg Boss to drive subscriptions.
While its future SVoD strategy remains uncertain, industry experts suggest JioHotstar may expand further by acquiring niche language-based streaming platforms.
