Rats are one of the oldest surviving mammals on Earth. While they are considered a bad omen in Europe, they are worshipped in India. It is believed that the rat is the vehicle of Lord Ganesha. In many places, rats are kept as pets, just like dogs, cats, and parrots.
World Rat Day is celebrated on April 4, and this observance began in 2002. People often dislike rats because they spread serious diseases like the plague and cause damage to grains and clothing. However, they are also known to be highly intelligent creatures.
Why Rats Are Important in Science
Every new drug or vaccine is first tested on rats to determine its benefits and risks. Only after successful trials on rats is a drug or vaccine approved for use in humans.
Interesting Facts About Rats
Rats have an excellent memory. Once they travel a path, they never forget it.
Their front teeth grow very fast, allowing them to gnaw through walls, bricks, or even cement. If rats do not keep chewing on objects, their teeth can grow 1 to 2 inches within a year.
Rats can cause more than 30 diseases in humans, with the deadliest being the plague.
They prefer to live in groups, and interestingly, if one of them falls sick or gets injured, the others take care of it.
Rats are expert swimmers and can navigate even deep water with ease.
Like cats, their bodies are very flexible, allowing them to survive falls from heights of up to 50 feet without injury.
Unlike humans, rats only have fingers; they do not have thumbs.
