17-year-old girl who came to become a nun found hanging; Malayali priest in police custody.

In Satna, Madhya Pradesh, a 17-year-old girl who had come to become a nun was found hanging from a ceiling fan. The deceased, Pratima Bagewar, a native of Assam, was a member of the Preritharam Congregation under the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese. The incident occurred on April 13 at around 5:30 PM. Pratima was found hanging by a group of nuns and other young women. They immediately informed Malayali priest Fr. Nobi George, who was nearby.

According to statements given to the police by the convent authorities, Fr. Nobi, upon arriving at the scene, noticed that Pratima still had a pulse and immediately arranged to shift her to the hospital.

However, the police have taken Fr. Nobi into custody for questioning, though no official arrest has been made. Church sources have claimed that the priest did nothing wrong and alleged that local BJP leaders may have influenced the police action. Authorities have stated that further proceedings will take place only after the victim's family arrives.
