Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai has been officially recommended as the 52nd Chief Justice of India. The recommendation was made by the current Chief Justice, Sanjiv Khanna. Since Justice Khanna is set to retire on May 13, Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai will take oath as Chief Justice on May 14. As he is due to retire in November 2025, his term will last for approximately six months.
Justice B.R. Gavai will be the second person from the Dalit community to become Chief Justice of India, after Justice K.G. Balakrishnan in 2007. As a senior judge of the Supreme Court, he has been part of several landmark judgments, including the one upholding the 2016 demonetisation decision and the verdict declaring the electoral bonds scheme unconstitutional.
