Couples marrying against the wishes of their parents will not be provided police protection, says Allahabad High Court.

The Allahabad High Court has ruled that police protection cannot be provided to couples who marry against the wishes of their parents. The court observed that it is not the judiciary’s responsibility to ensure security for couples who elope and marry of their own choice. It further stated that unless there is a clear and specific threat to the life and liberty of such couples, they cannot demand police protection.

The High Court also remarked that those who marry against their parents' wishes should face society together with mutual support.

Justice Saurabh Srivastava made the observation while considering a writ petition filed by Shreya Keservani and her husband. The court cited the Supreme Court’s judgment in Lata Singh vs. State of Uttar Pradesh in delivering its verdict and disposed of the case accordingly.

Reiterating its stance, the court emphasized that providing protection to eloping couples is not part of the judiciary’s duties. It also pointed out that the petitioners had not submitted any concrete evidence of threats to their life or liberty, nor had they filed any complaint with the police.
