A distinguished delegation from the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church participated in the Inaugural Mass of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, held at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The delegation attended on behalf of His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan.

Representing the Church were His Eminence Metropolitan Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, His Eminence Metropolitan Abraham Mar Stephanos, and Reverend Father Aswin Fernandes. As a gesture of fraternal goodwill, the delegation presented a beautifully hand-carved sandalwood cross, inlaid with stones and crafted by artisans from Udupi, Mangalore.

The symbolic gift reflected the warmth and brotherhood the Malankara Church extends to the new Pontiff. Their presence at the solemn Eucharistic celebration emphasized the long-standing bonds of Christian fellowship and ecumenical collaboration between the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and the Roman Catholic Church.

It reaffirmed a shared commitment to unity, mutual respect, and ongoing dialogue among ancient Christian traditions. In a message delivered to the newly enthroned Pope, His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews III offered heartfelt congratulations and prayers for a pontificate blessed with peace, wisdom, and renewed spiritual leadership.

The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, rooted in apostolic tradition, continues to champion efforts toward Christian unity. Its participation in this significant event highlights the Church’s enduring dedication to building bridges of communion and cooperation across the global Christian family.
