To ensure seamless cell phone connectivity for New York City subway riders, 5G service will be available on the northern section of the G train by the end of this year, Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) officials announced. Connectivity will also be extended to the East River tunnel that carries the 4 and 5 lines by the end of the year.
These upgrades are part of a $600 million citywide wireless rollout led by Boldyn Networks. The project is fully funded by Boldyn, which will also retain all revenue generated from the network.
Currently, only select tunnel sections — such as those used by the L train and the 42nd Street Shuttle — have cell service. MTA is coordinating installations with other construction work to streamline the process. The A and C lines are next in line for 5G expansion.
Cell service in subway stations began in 2011 and is now available at all 281 underground stations. With this new rollout, riders will have uninterrupted connectivity even within tunnels, and the MTA hopes that faster internet access will make commutes more convenient and enjoyable.
