Air India Revises Free Baggage Allowance for Economy Class on US-India Flights; New Charges for Extra Bags

Air India has revised its free checked baggage allowance for Economy Class passengers on flights from the US to India. This change came into effect on June 5, 2025, and will apply to bookings made on or after this date.

Under the new policy, Economy Class passengers holding tickets in the 'Value' segment (the lowest Economy fare) will now be allowed only one free checked bag weighing up to 23 kg. Previously, passengers were permitted two free bags, each weighing 23 kg. If a passenger wishes to carry a second bag of the same weight, they will now have to pay an additional $240 USD.

However, there's an alternative for passengers to avoid this extra cost. Instead of a 'Value' segment Economy Class ticket, passengers can opt for a 'Classic' segment ticket. This allows them to check in two bags, each weighing 23 kg, free of charge, regardless of the Air India route, flight, or travel date between the USA and India.

The difference between Air India's 'Value' and 'Classic' fares is approximately only $60. This means that by paying just $60 more for a 'Classic' fare ticket, passengers can carry two bags of 23 kg each. This offers a potential saving of $180 compared to the $240 they would pay for a second bag in Economy 'Value' class.

This change will directly impact regular travelers on US-India routes and those who typically carry more luggage. Air India authorities have advised passengers to be mindful of the new rates when booking their tickets.
