Chicago IL:
Beneath a canopy of evergreens and the gentle hum of urban whimsy, we embarked on a summer pilgrimage to Portland, Oregon—a city where bridges arc like poetry over the Willamette River, and the air carries the scent of roses, coffee, and dreams. Known as the Rose City, Portland weaves a tapestry of rugged wilderness, eclectic culture, and progressive charm. Fresh off last year’s breathtaking encounter with Mount Rainier, we plotted a road trip from Tacoma, Washington, in late May, armed with the vibrant insights of TravelPortland.com.

Our adventure began with a detour to the raw, elemental beauty of Mount St. Helens. At the Forest Learning Center and Visitor Center, we were swept into the fiery saga of the 1980 eruption through immersive exhibits, feeling the pulse of a mountain still whispering its volcanic secrets. Trails led us to vistas where the peak stood proud, a photographer’s muse framed by wildflowers and sky. Further along, Fort Vancouver National Historic Site unfolded tales of the Columbia River’s fur trade past, its Hudson’s Bay Company legacy etched into the riverbanks.
Seeking respite, we melted into the embrace of Violet Suites PDX, a boutique haven that redefined luxury. This three-bedroom sanctuary, with its heated floors, spa-inspired steam shower, in-suite laundry, and sleek, modern design, felt like a love letter to comfort. Quiet yet opulent, it was our home away from home, elevating every moment of our journey.

The next dawn greeted us with vegan delights at Doe Donuts, a quirky, plant-based gem that set the tone for a soulful morning. We wandered into the Portland Japanese Garden, tucked in Washington Park’s West Hills, where serenity bloomed in every Zen-raked stone and whispering bamboo. Hailed as the most authentic Japanese garden outside Japan, it was a portal to peace. Nearby, the International Rose Test Garden unfurled its 10,000 rose bushes—600 varieties ablaze in color and fragrance, their WWI-era roots weaving history into every petal. Late May was the perfect season, a kaleidoscope for the senses and a haven for our lenses.
Afternoon brought us to Pittock Mansion, a regal sentinel overlooking the city. Its French Renaissance and Victorian elegance, paired with early-1900s innovations, painted a vivid portrait of Portland’s gilded past. That evening, we savored the fiery, soulful flavors of Mirisata, a vegan Sri Lankan Street food spot born from a pop-up. Pigeon pea fritters and jackfruit-potato croquettes danced on our palates, a delicious rebellion against the ordinary.

Day two dawned with the tranquil beauty of Lan Su Chinese Garden in Old Town Chinatown. This Ming Dynasty–inspired scholar’s garden was a living poem, its koi ponds and intricate pavilions radiating calm. At Yun Shui Teahouse, nestled in the Tower of Cosmic Reflection, we sipped delicate Chinese teas, the world fading into a soft hum of serenity.
By afternoon, we chased adventure to Multnomah Falls, Oregon’s towering, year-round cascade in the Columbia River Gorge. En route, Mount Hood’s snow-capped majesty stole our breath, a postcard came to life. The falls, steeped in the legend of the Multnomah maiden who sacrificed for her people, wove spiritual depth into their misty roar. A 2.4-mile hike rewarded us with heart-stirring views, and a final stop at Vista House at Crown Point unveiled a panoramic sweep of the Gorge—a moment etched in memory

Back in Portland, the Pearl District beckoned with its gritty-turned-glamorous charm. Once the heart of the city’s arts scene, its galleries, Brewery Blocks, and Powell’s City of Books—a labyrinthine wonder housing over a million volumes—ignited our imaginations. A twilight stroll through the West End’s fashion-forward streets capped the night with Portland’s electric pulse.

Our final day began at Jam on Hawthorne, an art-drenched cafe where vegan dishes sparked joy. Then, we sought solace at The Grotto, a 62-acre sanctuary known as the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother. Perched atop Rocky Butte, its lower-level shrine, carved into volcanic cliffs, and upper-level botanical gardens, accessible by elevator, offered quiet reverence. The Meditation Chapel’s sweeping views, a meditative labyrinth, and international shrines nestled in lush gardens left us in awe.
Portland, Oregon, wove itself into our hearts—a city where nature and culture entwine like ivy, where waterfalls sing, gardens whisper, and every corner hums with creativity. From serene sanctuaries to bustling streets, the Rose City’s soul lingers, a melody we’ll carry long after the road home.
