Jackson County State’s Attorney Michael Carr recused himself from the Pravin Varughese criminal investigation, the Southern reported.

The State’s Attorney Appellate Prosecutor has been appointed to handle the case, according to a news release by the State’s Attorney’s office.

Dr Ben Margolis, the Chicago pathologist who performed and independent autopsy of Varughese, released a statement Saturday saying Carr showed unprofessional behavior and his actions raised ethical concerns.

Carr said he denies allegations of unfairness and unprofessionalism while handling the Varughese case, but is willing to step aside and have his work reviewed.

“When there are allegations surrounding some kind of personal unfairness or corruption, it is appropriate for the attorney involved in the case to request that a special prosecutor come in,” Carr said. “I am more than willing to expose to the public and to capable prosecutors what I have looked at and viewed and have asked the court to appoint the special persecutor in this case to do just that.
