New Delhi, June 10
A day after former Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar was arrested in a case of an alleged forged degree, Delhi Police chief B.S. Bassi on Wednesday said that the police would probe if it was a racket.

Finding out those behind the forgery of documents was the "most important" aspect of the case involving Tomar, Bassi told media persons here.

"Who made them (documents)? Was it done by him (Tomar) or were these procured?" the police officer asked.

Bassi pointed out that if the documents were procured, it was important to identify the persons behind it.

"Since when was the racket functioning? Who else, besides Tomar, was provided such documents?" he said.

Bassi said that earlier experience indicated that those involved in such rackets provide forged documents to many people.

Police would seek to identify all those involved, and also persons who were given such documents.

The police commissioner said that such malpractices damaged the educational system and police would reach to the bottom of the matter.

Tomar, arrested by Delhi Police on Tuesday, is currently in four-day police remand. He resigned after his arrest.

Tomar challenges arrest in fake degree case

Former Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar on Wednesday moved a sessions court here, challenging his arrest in an alleged fake degree case.

The application was mentioned before Additional Sessions Judge Sanjeev Jain, who refused an early hearing to Tomar's plea and posted the matter for Thursday.

In his application, Tomar called his arrest illegal, saying police did not follow proper procedure while apprehending him.

Tomar, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, has also sought bail in the case.

A magistrate court on Tuesday sent Tomar to four-day police custody following his arrest in the alleged fake law degree case. The court also rejected his bail application.

Tomar was arrested here on Tuesday morning by Delhi Police who registered a case of cheating, forgery and conspiracy against him.

Police also told the court that the investigation in the case was at an initial stage and the documents pertaining to the law degree obtained by Tomar were "fake".

Appearing for Tomar, senior advocate and AAP member H.S. Phoolka opposed the plea of police, saying Tomar's documents were not fake and he was arrested on false information.

Phoolka also requested the court to grant bail to his client, saying that he would fully cooperate in the investigation and would not try to tamper with the evidence in the case.
