Modi awards outstanding handloom weavers
Chennai, Aug 7 :Launching the National Handloom Dy and India Handloom brand here on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi awarded outstanding weavers here.
Modi conferred Sant Kabir Award and the National Awards to weavers for their outstanding contribution for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014.
He also presented the India Handloom mark for the Salem dhoti and Tangail and Tanchoi sarees.
The speciality of the Salem dhoti also known as "Myil Kann (peacock eyes)" is that the borders are designed like the eyes of a peacock. Further the dhoti has to have coloured borders - one red and the other green. It is generally worn on special occasions in Tamil Nadu.
