Two US citizens among 84 killed in Nice attack
Washington, July 15
An American father and his 11-year-old son were among those killed in the terror attack in Nice, France, US officials said.
US State Department spokesman John Kirby said the pair was among the 84 killed when a truck ploughed through a crowd gathered for Bastille Day celebrations in Nice.
Kirby didn't identify the individuals by name.
However, a family spokesperson told CBS News that the two were Sean Copeland, 51, and his son, Brodie, 11.
The two were vacationing with their family, said Jess Davis, who is friends with Meagan Copeland, Sean Copeland's daughter.
CBS Dallas reports that the Copelands live in the Austin, Texas area.
Davis issued a statement on the family's behalf saying: "We are heartbroken and in shock over the loss of Brodie Copeland, an amazing son and brother who lit up our lives, and Sean Copeland, a wonderful husband and father. They are so loved."
Brodie played for the Hill County baseball team, which posted a statement condoling the death. "You are in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers. Rest in peace, Brodie and Sean, you will be remembered by many."
Kirby said the US is providing assistance to those affected by the attack, while the embassy in France is trying to account for all Americans in the Mediterranean city.
