Tappan Zee Bridge Closes Following Collapse of Construction Crane
A crane collapsed on the Tappan Zee Bridge on Tuesday, halting traffic in both directions, authorities said.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day said
five people had injuries that were not life-threatening —
three drivers and two bridge workers, according to Journal News. The Coast Guard, however, said
the crane operator suffered critical injuries.
While crews were in the process at
mid-afternoon of cutting up the fallen crane to remove it from
the travel lanes, Day said that the bridge had sustained damage
that would delay its reopening to traffic.
He said the Westchester-bound side of the bridge had a "punch through" hole caused by the falling crane in the right-most lane, and a hole in the external guard rail.
