WMC elects new global leadership; representation from US not sufficient

BANGALORE ---  The 10th Biennial Global Conference of World Malayalee Council, which was held in Bangalore from August 26-28, elected its  global leadership for 2016-2018 headed by Issac John Pattaniparambil as the Global Chairman and Dr. A. V. Anoop (Chennai) as WMC Global President.

The three-day conference, which was inaugurated by former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, and attended by ministers and high ranking government officials, elected a 41-member Executive Council under the supervision of Dr. J. Alexander IAS [Retd.], the Chief Nomination & Election Commissioner of WMC.

  T.P. Vijayan  [Pune] is the new Secretary General, C. U. Mathai (Dubai), Secretary, and Jobinson Kottathil [Switzerland] Treasurer. The full list of office bearers is appended.

 The first executive council meeting of the new team has called upon members of WMC’s 57 provinces across the world to expand the reach and revitalize the activities of the organization.

 The three-day conference drew more than 400 delegates from across India and abroad. Dignitaries who took part include Ambassador TP Sreenivasan; Dr Babu Paul, former Additional Chief Secretary of Kerala; Christy Fernandez, former Secretary General of Rashtrapathy Bhavan; U. T. Khader, Minister for Food and Public Distribution Karnataka and Om Prakash, Director General of Police, Karnataka.

 Prominent businessmen, including Gokulam Gopalan, Shaji Baby John and Bobby Chemmannur, were among the dignitaries present at the event.

 The spectacular highlight of the conference was the World Cancer Walk, which drew hundreds of people from all walks. “I should put on record my sincere gratitude to Paul and Vasantha for the meticulous preparations for the walk for a great social cause. The presence of Olympian Anju Bobby George and Bobby George along with cadets, school children and WMC delegates from across the world for the walk was really inspiring to one and all,” said Issac.

  â€œWe are quite upbeat about the future of WMC as a think-tank for the Malayalee Diaspora. We believe, our new team under a dynamic President Anoop, who is a WMC veteran, will be able to help reposition WMC as a more vibrant, functional and proactive body relevant to the present day needs of the community at large,” said Issac, who was the immediate past president of the Global Ad hoc Committee of WMC.

 The global ad hoc committee was set up at the landmark Vishwa Malayalee Unity Day on December 1, 2015 at Mascot Hotel Trivandrum, marking the formal merger of WMC's two streams worldwide.

 â€œWMC is the most authentic and widely represented rallying point for global Malayalees. The global conference in Bangalore has helped to give the organisation a new vitality and direction so that it can play a more constructive leadership role as global though leader and catalyst for social and economic changes,” Issac said in his address at the conference soon after taking the oath of office as chairman on August 28.

 â€œI also express my profound gratitude for the warmth and friendship the Bangalore Province team and organizers of the conference led by Paul Fernandez and Radhakrishnan and Thomas Mathew have shown to all delegates.

 â€œEveryone of us has played a vital role in making the event memorable and indeed a defining moment of WMC in its next level of growth. I am grateful to Dr J Alexander, Chief NEC for his proactive role and patronage,”  Issac  said.

 The global chairman congratulated the outgoing leadership led by VC Praveen as Chairman and Johny Kuruvilla as Advisory Council Chair, and AS Jose, WMC Goodwill Ambassador, for facilitating the smooth democratic transfer of power.

 The constitution of the new Global Advisory Council, which includes veteran leaders and mentors of WMC, will be finalised at a later stage.
